Ten Mile Mushrooms Plug Spawn — Grow More Mushrooms, Naturally
Plug spawn is the ultimate outdoor mushroom growing project — a natural, low-maintenance way to cultivate gourmet fungi right in your backyard. Once your log is inoculated, it becomes a self-sustaining mushroom source, producing flushes across multiple seasons and, for some species, for years at a time.
Why Plug Spawn?
- Easy log inoculation: Perfectly designed to colonize hardwood logs — typically 40–48 inches long and 4–6 inches in diameter. Each log requires about 50 plugs to kick off growth.
- Minimal tools required: Just a drill, a rubber mallet (if needed), and wax to seal — no specialized inoculation tool needed, making this one of the most accessible ways to grow mushrooms outdoors.
- Beginner friendly: No prior growing experience required. It's one of the most forgiving and rewarding entry points into outdoor mushroom cultivation.
Mushroom Plug Spawn Varieties Available
- Lion's Mane – Sweet, savory, and visually striking. Slower to fruit, often producing in a year or two. Prefers birch and maple, though other hardwoods work too.
- Blue Oyster – Thrives in colder temperatures; a beginner-friendly strain.
- Yellow Oyster – Loves warmth and fruits in warmer months, with a voracious appetite for dead ash.
- Shiitake – A time-honored favorite that can fruit for years. Typically begins producing after around 12 months.
- Snow Oyster – Strikingly white and best suited for cooler seasons such as early spring, late fall, or winter.
- Chestnut – Attractive orange-brown caps with a nutty, earthy flavor.
- Reishi – Medicinal mushroom prized for its glossy, lacquered caps and health benefits.
