Spores, live culture, nutrient broth, stir bars, and a stir plate are not included.
Four jars for separate cultures
Set up a different liquid culture in each jar — up to four species or strains at once. Quart size gives you more room per jar than the smaller jars commonly sold in starter kits.
Filtered gas exchange
Each lid has a 0.22 μm nylon syringe filter that permits gas exchange while helping limit airborne contamination. The filter supports healthy culture growth — it does not guarantee a sterile culture.
Inject or withdraw through the self-healing port
The self-healing injection port gives syringe access for introducing or withdrawing liquid culture without removing the lid, so you can inoculate and sample while keeping the jar sealed.
Prepare your media
Prepare and sterilize an appropriate liquid culture nutrient solution, then fill each jar and reseal the lid.
Inoculate through the port
Once cooled, sanitize the injection port and introduce approximately 2–5 cc (2–5 mL) of culture or spore syringe solution per jar using sterile technique.
Watch your culture develop
Keep the filter dry, gently swirl as appropriate, and observe for growth. Clear glass makes it easy to watch each culture develop.
How liquid culture works
Liquid culture is mycelium grown in a sterile nutrient solution. It lets growers expand a culture and later use it to inoculate suitable growing material. Label each jar with its species or strain and the inoculation date.
The jars in this bundle ship empty. Prepare and sterilize an appropriate liquid culture nutrient solution before inoculating. Once cooled, introduce approximately 2–5 cc (2–5 mL) of culture or spore syringe solution per prepared jar using sterile technique.
Keep the filter dry. Gently swirl the jar as appropriate, observe it for growth, and check the resulting culture for contamination before using it to inoculate grain. A spore syringe can introduce contamination into liquid culture even when handled carefully; testing on agar is recommended before expanding or using a culture.
